Book Review: Joe Pickett Novel Book 22 – Shadows Reel

Book Review: “Crosshairs” by C.J. Box

Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett is back, and this time he’s facing a dangerous new threat in “Crosshairs,” the latest installment in C.J. Box’s bestselling series. In this thrilling novel, Joe and his wife Marybeth find themselves in the crosshairs of a pair of killers after making separate, chilling discoveries.

The story begins with Joe being called out to investigate a moose-poaching incident, only to find that it’s much more sinister than he thought. A local fishing guide has been brutally murdered, and the evidence points to a group of dangerous poachers.

Meanwhile, Marybeth opens an unmarked package at the library where she works, and finds a photo album that belonged to an infamous Nazi official. As she delves into the album’s dark history, she learns that several Wyoming soldiers fought at Hitler’s Eagles Nest retreat in the Alps during World War II. And one of them took the Fuhrer’s personal photo album. Did another soldier take this one and keep it all these years?

As Joe and Marybeth try to unravel the mysteries surrounding the murder and the photo album, a close neighbor is killed, and they realize that their family is in danger. But who is after the book, and how can they solve its mystery before someone hurts them or their girls?

Adding to the tension is Nate Romanowski, Joe’s falcon enthusiast friend, who is on the hunt for the man who stole his rare birds and attacked his wife. Using a network of fellow falconers, Nate tracks the thief from one city to another, and he soon realizes that the true threat is much more dangerous than he thought. A stunning final showdown is inevitable.

“Crosshairs” is a riveting read that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. C.J. Box’s writing is engaging and suspenseful, and he has a knack for creating characters that are both relatable and complex. Joe Pickett is a good man who is dedicated to protecting his community, and readers will root for him every step of the way.

Marybeth, Joe’s wife, is a strong and intelligent woman who is not afraid to take risks to solve a mystery. She is an important part of the story, and her discoveries help to move the plot forward.

Nate Romanowski, Joe’s friend, is a fascinating character who adds depth to the story. His love of falcons and his determination to protect his family make him a hero in his own right.

The setting of “Crosshairs” is also a character in itself. Wyoming’s natural beauty is described in vivid detail, and the author’s love and respect for the land are evident in every page. The wilderness is a dangerous place, and this novel shows the many ways it can be deadly.

Overall, “Crosshairs” is an excellent addition to the Joe Pickett series, and a must-read for fans of suspense and drama. It’s a thrilling and engaging novel that will keep you turning the pages until the very end. So buckle up and get ready for a wild ride!
