Book Review: Gray Man, Book 12 – Burner

The Gray Man is back, and this time he’s caught in the middle of a dangerous game involving the Russian mafia and the CIA. Mark Greaney’s latest electrifying thriller, “Relentless,” is the ninth installment of the Gray Man series and will have readers at the edge of their seats from beginning to end.

The novel opens with Alex Velesky, who thinks he has uncovered a criminal conspiracy by stealing records from the Swiss bank that employs him. But when he realizes he has tapped into the mother lode of corruption, he finds himself being hunted by everyone from the Russian mafia to the CIA. Court Gentry, otherwise known as The Gray Man, and his former lover, Zoya Zakharova, both want Velesky for different reasons, but their conflicting motives create obstacles for them and put them all in danger.

Greaney does a masterful job of keeping the tension high throughout the story, with numerous action-packed scenes that leave the reader breathless. From Zurich to St. Lucia, the Gray Man has travelled to 35 countries in his latest adventure, and the exotic locations add to the thrill of the story.

The Gray Man is not just a skilled assassin; he’s also a complex character with a troubled past and a conscience, which sometimes puts him at odds with his employers. In “Relentless,” we see the Gray Man struggling with his feelings for Zoya and the guilt he feels about his past actions. Despite being a lethal weapon, the Gray Man is still human, and that’s what makes him so relatable.

The supporting characters in “Relentless” are just as interesting as the Gray Man himself. Zoya, the Russian spy turned contract killer, is a force to be reckoned with. Her relationship with the Gray Man adds a romantic element to the story and provides a nice contrast to the action scenes. The villain of the story, Mikhail Artemiev, head of the Russian mafia, is ruthless and cunning, making him a formidable adversary for the Gray Man.

What sets “Relentless” apart from other thrillers is the attention to detail and the authenticity of the plot. Greaney does his research and makes sure the technical aspects of the story are accurate, from the weapons used to the protocols followed by the CIA. The result is a story that feels real and immersive.

In conclusion, “Relentless” is a thrilling rollercoaster ride that fans of the Gray Man series will love. It’s a high-stakes game of cat and mouse that keeps the reader guessing until the very end. Greaney’s writing is crisp and engaging, and the characters are well-developed and relatable. If you’re looking for a fun, action-packed adventure, then “Relentless” is the book for you. Just be prepared to lose sleep, because once you start reading, you won’t be able to put it down.
