How do we ensure students achieve proficiency with the English language while receiving a rich and comprehensive education? One that affirms and celebrates their identities and helps them learn about and understand others?

Today’s technology presents us with answers. Thanks to computer-driven translation, AI, and advanced classroom tools, we stand to put every student on a path to success with the English language and beyond.

The numbers behind bilingual education

Within three decades, the number of households speaking a language other than English has nearly tripled from 23 million to 68 million. In states like California, Texas, New Mexico, and Nevada, these numbers are even more drastic, with 44 percent, 36 percent, 33 percent, and 31 percent of their populations speaking a different language at home.

As expected, this is reflected in the United States’ student population, which also grew in non-native English learners over the last 10 years. In 2020, one survey found that approximately 5 million public school students were English learners–that’s over 10 percent of students. Again, Texas has about 20 percent of those students, California has 17 percent, 16 percent are in New Mexico and 13 percent are in Nevada.

Bilingual education’s impact

With 1 in every 10 students experiencing a lack of English proficiency, millions are at risk for struggles with reading and writing comprehension, reduced academic achievement, and less rigorous tracks of study, which lead to increased dropout rates, and lowered educational attainment and human capital.

Bilingual education has been shown to not only increase native language proficiency but English proficiency as well, as the ultimate goal should be to build mastery in both languages. If a large contingent of the United States population were to not have English proficiency, they would suffer. Some studies have suggested that non-native language speakers struggle to access effective healthcare, while others have found increases in negative interactions.

It should be recognized that bilingual education lifts all boats. In a world that is now so connected, those who speak multiple languages have much to gain. These speakers are more competitive in the workplace, see more job opportunities, and even are found to have better brain health.

Further and especially in these new days of AI, human-to-human connection, communication, and collaboration have and will only become more paramount.

Where edtech steps in

While the student population speaking languages other than English within the U.S. has rapidly grown over the last three decades, technology has advanced even faster. Now, edtech can support bilingual education in a way impossible before.

Smart investments in technology not only improve education for bilingual and non-native English speakers but also help make educators themselves more efficient and impactful, effectively preparing all students for the future.

Building bilingual materials

It’s uncommon for educational materials to be authored for non-English speakers in the native language of the user. It comes down to a simple return on investment calculation, as the number of users is too low compared with the larger market for a publisher to produce these materials in a cost-effective manner.

Educational content within the U.S. is typically written in English, and then translated into other languages as needed. Largely human-driven, this process is error-prone,  resource-heavy, slow, and costly. Since this process is so intensive, curricula available in languages other than English were typically limited to the most common, specifically Spanish, even though there are far more others that need to be served.

Today’s computer-driven translation and AI translation can translate a text with incredible accuracy in a matter of minutes. Then, human translators can check for accuracy, add relevant context, and run quality control, significantly reducing production costs and increasing the effectiveness of the text.

With cost and resource savings, more time can be dedicated to improving the quality of these texts, ultimately improving how the curriculum in languages other than English flows into and improves English learning, to create truly bilingual students.

Technology can also assist in solving the issue of the limited number of languages available. There are over 350 languages used within the United States, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, making it one of the most language-diverse countries in the world. In fact, 21.6 percent of the population reports speaking a language other than English at home. Outside of English and Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Arabic are the most common. There are also Native North American dialects like Navajo, Yupik, Dakota, Apache, Keres, and Cherokee.

Because AI and machine learning can translate far more quickly, it is significantly less costly to create content in any given language, adding to the number of curricula offered in languages other than English.

Many make the mistake of believing that bilingual education means that you are separately teaching students in different languages forever. This is not true. Real bilingual education is developing a path that gently brings learners who speak languages other than English down the path to full English instruction, developing proficiency in both languages as their education progresses.

With this in mind, producers of high-quality core curricula are already offering a comprehensive set of resources and strategies to support bilingual education. Both EL Education and Illustrative Mathematics, national nonprofit publishers of K-12 curriculum, include the development of English language proficiency within their curricula.

The benefits of rapid translation go beyond the walls of the classroom as well. Parents and/or guardians, of course, want to be updated on the progress of their children and what they are learning. In the past, limited-English or non-English households may have struggled with understanding assignments, feedback, or grading. Now, not only is the curriculum more accessible, but translation and chat capabilities power direct parent-to-teacher communication in any given language.

Better assessments and educational outcomes

We can lean on technology to do more than recreate texts. Through the use of AI and large language models, it is possible to efficiently generate standards-aligned assessments in foreign languages as well.

As with content, most assessments and standardized tests are simply translated directly from English into another language. Imagine how difficult it would be to try and learn something that wasn’t translated perfectly to your native language, and then try to take a test that wasn’t translated well either.

Again, technology can drive English language translations, leaving the final quality assurance and relevancy check to instructional experts. When both the learning and testing materials are correctly reflected in the right language, with the right cultural context, and delivered in a relevant way, testing becomes far more reliable.

Take today’s state standardized tests as an example. What we’ve learned is that most are not actually testing for a skillset, but really just test how prepared you are for a standardized test. These test procedural fluency and general background knowledge more than skill and ability.

A study found that on average, English-learning students score approximately 46 percent lower on high school reading tests and 31% below on high school mathematics tests. But this is not because of lack of skill; it’s for a lack of proficiency in standardized testing.

Students with experience in standardized testing and general background knowledge typically perform the best, whereas those with a lack of context underperform. True bilingual education equips non-native English speakers with the tools they need to perform on standardized testing. On a macro level, this provides more accurate insights into state, district, and school performance.

More support for educators

Perhaps one of the most important ways technology can benefit bilingual education is by supporting teachers. Educators are burdened enough, and while 62 percent of U.S. schools have at least some English-learning students, not all teachers are properly equipped to provide equitable education.

Thankfully, we are at a place where edtech can significantly reduce the cognitive load placed on teachers. Tools like digital assessments and grade books can automatically grade assignments and assessments, including those in other languages, alleviating the stress of grading across dialects.

Classroom technology provides easier access to curriculum in multiple languages, making it easier to navigate, utilize, and distribute. These technologies can give teachers their time back, reducing their burden and allowing them to spend more time with students.

Digital tools such as digital assessments, grade books, and learning management systems enable teachers to efficiently manage classroom activities and personalize instruction for diverse learners. Moreover, technology-integrated professional development programs empower educators to enhance their pedagogical practices and effectively implement bilingual curriculum frameworks.

But educators still require support, and with savings in materials and time, school leaders need to make an investment in teacher training. The bilingual population will only continue to grow, so the right investments need to be made to support teachers in their roles.

Technology can support here too–with tools that integrate professional learning and curriculum together, educators can become more proficient at teaching the bilingual curriculum, leading to more successful students.

Policy is a key player

Bilingual education will only continue to grow, but we need to look at it as a strength to support and develop. One of the great things about the United States of America is its cultural mix, diversity, and willingness to open its doors to others.

Another great aspect of the U.S. is the partnerships between the public and private sectors. In the case of bilingual education, the private sector has responded. Technology companies have, and will continue to, build products to support classrooms, but ultimately there is a policy call that must be made on the public end.

Effective bilingual education requires a comprehensive policy framework that supports the needs of diverse learners and promotes equity in education. Edtech plays a pivotal role in informing policy decisions by providing policymakers with data-driven insights into the efficacy of bilingual education initiatives.

By leveraging technology-enabled assessment data and analytics, policymakers can identify areas of improvement, allocate resources effectively, and develop evidence-based policies that promote educational equity and excellence. Moreover, partnerships between the public and private sectors enable the co-creation of innovative solutions that address the evolving needs of bilingual learners and educators.

While edtech is currently transforming the landscape of bilingual education, we won’t reach an optimal level of benefit until smart policy decisions are made in the name of bilingual education. Those in decision-making capacities at every level must recognize this as a high need and know that the problem cannot solve itself. Policymakers need to open the door to allow edtech providers to make an impact.

The time is now to make smart investments into the right curricula and tools to support educators and students. Educators need to be unburdened, and students need to be put on a path to success.

Still, only 37 percent have a plan for incorporating AI instruction in the classroom, according to the 2024 Voice of the Superintendent Survey released by education company EAB at the School Superintendent Association (AASA) National Conference on Education.

Eighty-four percent say teachers in their districts are concerned about students using generative AI to cheat and take shortcuts.

“EAB’s report confirms that teacher shortages, behavioral disruptions, worsening student mental health, and other familiar challenges are so pervasive that exploring how new technologies such as AI can help doesn’t even make the ‘to-do’ list,” said EAB Senior Director of K-12 Research Ben Court.

Superintendents indicated that staffing issues remain their most pressing problem. Roughly half (52 percent) say the number of teacher vacancies has increased over the past 12 months, and two-thirds (66 percent) say the number of vacancies for noninstructional staff has increased.

A rise in work absences among teachers further compounds the staffing shortage. Nearly half (48 percent) of districts report an increase in missed workdays among instructional staff over the past year, while 55 percent of districts report an increase in missed workdays among noninstructional staff.

The survey also showed there has been little relief from rising rates of disruptive behavior and student absenteeism that soared during the pandemic. Sixty-four percent cite no improvement while 42 percent say rates of absenteeism have increased over the past year. Similarly, 76 percent of superintendents report no improvement in disruptive behaviors while 57 percent say disruptive incidents have increased.

“EAB continues to work with district leaders to share data and best practices on how to overcome these perennial problems so they can focus on teaching students the skills they need to succeed,” Court continued.

This tool was trained in instructional methodology honed over the course of 26+ million tutoring sessions that Tutor.com has delivered. It doesn’t rewrite a student’s work, but rather provides insightful guidance about how (and where) the student can make revisions to improve an essay’s style, structure, and composition. Students get summary feedback–with advice addressing areas such as flow and transitions, showing vs. telling, conciseness and redundancy, use of imagery, grammar and syntax, and more–along with line-by-line feedback, in which certain excerpts are highlighted with suggestions for revision displayed in mouseover text.

If you’ve ever used AudioPen to dictate feedback on student work, you’ve been using AI. AudioPen is an AI-powered tool that converts voice notes into text that’s easy to read and ready to share with students and fellow teachers.

Students in a classroom learn and consume information differently. Educators who use the Chrome extension Brisk are using AI to ensure information is accessible to all learners. Clicking on the Brisk extension lets teachers see the reading level of any text on the internet. Brisk uses the length of sentences and the vocabulary used in the text to determine what age level the text is appropriate for. Brisk shows up on any news article teachers land on and is accessible on most sites, which makes changing the text’s reading level as easy as clicking a button. When educators convert an article, Brisk will automatically populate it in a new Google Doc for them to then share with their students. Teachers also can have Brisk use the article to generate additional materials, like a reading comprehension quiz.

Duolingo, a popular language-learning app, has literally been using AI for years. AI is behind the app’s ability to personalize learning for its users, leveraging data around their strengths and weaknesses to create more engaging and productive learning experiences. AI helps Duolingo analyze user responses to identify common grammar mistakes and make corrections and suggestions, and analyze the sounds and patterns of users’ speech for targeted feedback on their pronunciation. It’s also behind the auto-suggest in Stories freeform writing exercises, which helps learners learn to write in the language they’re learning. Using AI, Duolingo is able to provide access to high-quality education in places where students don’t have access to good schools and teachers, and enables students to certify their English proficiency in places where accessing test centers is either challenging, or impossible. As most teachers will tell you, in the post-Covid world, technology is an everyday part of education. It has undeniably transformed the way educators engage students and deliver content.

As an educator with 10 years of experience teaching in diverse settings in the United States and abroad, interactive maps have become a staple in my lessons. While primarily a geography resource, interactive maps can be used across various subjects within the social studies domain. Teachers can integrate maps into lessons related to history, cultural studies, and geopolitics. These maps go beyond traditional static maps, allowing students to investigate, evaluate, and engage with spatial information.  

Interactive maps help students develop a more comprehensive understanding of spatial relationships. It can be challenging for them to grasp distances on a static map. By manipulating an interactive map, they can understand the scale, proximity, and relative locations of various places, allowing a deeper understanding of global contexts. Interactive maps have the advantage of integrating multiple layers of information, unlike traditional maps. This feature allows educators to present numerous datasets simultaneously, which helps students analyze correlations and patterns more effectively. I find this particularly valuable as I seek to differentiate for all learners, ensuring that each student can engage with the material in a way that suits their abilities and strengths.  

Some interactive maps provide real-time data, allowing students to stay informed about current events and changes around the world. This is helpful in demonstrating how historical research is connected to current events. This is one effective way to prepare our students to be global citizens and fosters cross-cultural understanding. 

In addition, interactive maps are a terrific way for students to explore new areas of the world. In general, students are drawn to maps and globes in the classroom and the beauty of the interactive map is that it allows them to zoom in, pan, and click on specific regions or events, which encourages even more active participation and sparks their curiosity.  

There are many digital interactive maps available to today’s educators, but here are my top three choices: 

The Discovery Education interactive map: This resource within the Discovery Education Experience platform is user-friendly and covers a wide range of topics and all continental regions, making it a versatile tool for various social studies lessons. It allows students to explore human geography changes over time with overlays such as Political Boundaries, Political Labels, Landform Labels, Water Labels, Major Cities, etc. and various base maps like Physical, Elevation, Climate Zones, Biome, Predominant Religion, and more. Discovery Education allows for seamless integration with multimedia resources, allowing teachers to supplement map exploration with videos, articles, and images. It saves hours of scouring the internet to find resources because there is such an abundance of quality supplemental materials found on Discovery Education. For what I need in the classroom, the Discovery Education Interactive map fits the bill.  

The National Geographic MapMaker: This is another valuable classroom resource I recommend for your teacher toolkit. This functional tool includes a launch guide for educators and allows teachers or students to create custom maps. MapMaker allows for in-depth research into locations down to the street level. This program allows the integration of real-time data, so students engage with current information. MapMaker also offers interactive learning activities that encourage student participation. Whether it’s creating custom maps, exploring overlays, or analyzing geographical patterns, these activities make the learning experience robust. There is a learning curve with MapMaker and it will probably require more support than other resources, but tech-savvy students will love it.  

Running Reality: Running Reality is a digital history tool that brings history to life in an accessible, immersive, and engaging way for students through a striking visual narrative. It is a remarkably simple-to-operate resource that allows students to see the events that have shaped national boundaries and culture throughout world history. With Running Reality, students can explore historical events and understand how they affected the world as we know it. They can visualize the changes in national borders, watch as empires rise and fall, and understand how diverse cultures have evolved over time. Running Reality uses innovative technology to create a fully immersive experience, allowing students to feel like they are witnessing the events as they unfold.  

These tools are a wonderful way to make history come alive for students who may struggle with traditional textbooks or lectures. By engaging with history in a more interactive way, students are much more likely to retain what they have learned and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. To date, only six states have formulated a comprehensive AI policy absent federal guidance for districts to look to, according to findings from The 2024 Administrator AI Report: Perceptions, Practices, and Potential in Education, a new report from digital curriculum solution provider Imagine Learning. The report aims to identify administrators’ perceptions on the benefits and advantages of generative AI and benchmark its current rate of adoption.

Although several organizations, such as the CoSN, ISTE, and the Council of the Great City Schools have released generative AI guidelines and best-use practices for K-12 educators and districts, according to the report, 47 percent of administrators are planning to implement comprehensive policies on their own and 54 percent have indicated they would also like help from education solutions providers to reduce risks and concerns associated with generative AI.

One-third of administrators also expressed a desire for education companies to publish and use a code of ethics when developing generative AI, while 36 percent plan to implement guiding frameworks for adoption and use within their schools. 

These findings suggest the need for a strong call-to-action to increase technology use and services, as well as training and official guidance for safe AI implementation in schools, with education solution providers at the forefront of this push alongside schools.

Other notable findings from Imagine Learning’s report indicate the following sentiments and intentions from administrators: 

  • AI’s Net Positive Outlook in Education: 64 percent of administrators believe generative AI will positively impact education, with only a minimal number (5 percent) planning to ban it.
  • Positive Student Engagement with Generative AI: The majority of students using generative AI use it ethically to improve knowledge, with research (70 percent), writing refinement (65 percent), and creating study aids (55 percent) as top uses.
  • Easing the Burden on Teachers with Personalized Learning and Efficiency: Over one-third of administrators recognize generative AI’s role in creating personalized learning materials and saving time, a significant priority in K-12 education. 
  • Supporting Teachers and Curriculum Development: 50 percent see generative AI aiding in lesson planning, with notable contributions to idea generation and individualizing lesson materials that aid teachers in completing repetitive tasks, easing teacher burnout. 

“Districts are willing to integrate AI into their classrooms, but currently lack the proper resources, governance, and training needed to do so successfully,” said Sari Factor, Chief Strategy Officer at Imagine Learning. “Our survey reveals a critical opportunity for shaping AI’s role in education. It’s a collective call to action, urging us to work alongside policymakers and education organizations to craft guidelines that ensure AI’s integration is as responsible as it is transformative.”

The results are encouraging when it comes to analyzing how AI might improve teachers’ day-to-day experiences.

“While protecting students’ data privacy is a top concern and priority in the digital age, we’re very excited that teachers and administrators see the benefits of AI use in the classroom,” Factor added. “Teachers are under so much pressure today, and the question must be, ‘How can we support teachers and lighten their loads using AI to drive personalized learning and lesson plan creation to improve student engagement and achievement?’” 

“This survey isn’t just about understanding AI’s role in education—it’s a roadmap for responsible implementation,” said Kinsey Rawe, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Courseware & Instructional Services. “By understanding firsthand how AI tools enhance teaching and learning, we’re poised to guide the development of policies that are both innovative and attuned to the real needs of educators and students in a digital-first learning environment.” 

Consistent with recent findings from Imagine Learning’s 2023 Educator AI Report, both teachers and administrators recognize the potential for generative AI to alleviate much of the burden currently impacting teachers.

When a student goes home, they are inundated with many other potentially more engaging activities. In the last few decades, the main attractor for many students have been video games. Video games have become so mainstream over the years that children are just as engaged watching the games on streaming services like Twitch as playing them. The challenge posed to educators is how to gamify coursework that students can play, enjoy, and learn.

The most successful video games have a stratified reward system that rewards players at spaced intervals while the player works towards a goal. The best way to explain this is by looking at a successful game–let’s use World of Warcraft as an example. Players progress through levels toward the end objective while, along the way, completing objectives and earning in-game equipment. At the same time, the player can work and collaborate with other players to defeat more difficult challenges. This is analogous to the education system on a much more condensed time scale. There is an end goal in mind, achieving the maximum level or graduation. This is completed by working through objectives that, in education, are various courses: algebra, history, English, etc. Students earn grades as they complete objectives and even collaborate with classmates on projects. Understanding how the education system is similar to games is vital to redesigning an education-based learning system that would be more engaging for students.

People enjoy video games mainly because the games offer a sense of accomplishment that is often not achievable in the real world. The game gives them strong dopamine rushes that are not as easily achieved in real life. That is not to say that players don’t learn skills like students. For example, some of the best surgeons have impeccable hand-eye coordination and hand dexterity–this same skill is often present in video game enthusiasts. If a developer were to design an educational video game that students would want to play, one of the most important factors would be consistent dopamine hits to the students, i.e. a steady and tangible reward system. Students would want to see that the time put into the game is worth the effort in terms of achievement. Frustration in the classroom by learning a difficult topic is the same in a video game when a player is trying to complete a difficult level. The difference is that the player knows that after completion, there is a reward, but the same is not true when attempting to master the limit definition of a derivative. One of the best examples is the Reading Counts system. Students read books, pass quizzes, and get a certain number of points attributed to their profile.  The number of reading counts points serves as bragging rights among students. This is a tangible reward seen after completing a challenge, reading, and comprehending a novel.

Another difficulty in designing educational games is the need for students to complete cognitive processes like reading and answering questions instead of virtual activities like killing an orc. Reading and answering a question is not usually as engaging as learning how to defeat an enemy. Map out what objective you want the student to master and create the objective in terms of video game mechanics. Let’s continue the limit definition of a derivative as an example. To understand this concept students, need to know what a limit is, the notation of a derivative f’(x) = dy/dx, i.e., the change of y over the change of x, and the meaning of the notation within the limit. More is needed to fully master the topic, but not much more is necessary to apply this concept on practice problems.

In video games, there are various objectives that tend to build to a larger contest. Typically, there will be around five gathering/fetching quests prior to a player being able to attempt a final challenge. These are simple quests that require the player to talk to a non-player character (NPC) who explains some situation; the player then helps the NPC by collecting in-game items and returning them to the NPC for a reward. This serves as a means of improving the player’s status prior to attempting a final challenge. In terms of an educational game, it would be structured so that the NPC provides the necessary snippet of information–say, what a limit is, and the student would run around the virtual environment applying this concept. Rinse and repeat until all the prerequisite information is mastered and the student will be able to attempt the final challenge: an objective that requires the completion of multiple practice problems to complete. At the end of the challenge the student would receive some sort of reward for their accomplishment. Ideally this objective can either be mastered faster this way than in a traditional setting or be more engaging. One potential reward is a badge or another sort of microcredential that the student can use to display their progress towards mastery.

The integration of gaming mechanics into educational content offers a promising avenue to enhance student engagement and learning. The key lies in understanding the compelling elements of video games, such as a stratified reward system, collaborative challenges, and a sense of achievement, and effectively weaving them into educational frameworks. By creating an educational environment that mimics these aspects, educators can provide students with a learning experience that is educational, enjoyable, and rewarding. This approach can help bridge the gap between the engaging world of video games and the educational objectives of the classroom.

The goal is not just to compete with the allure of video games, but to harness their power to foster a deeper, more meaningful educational experience. By carefully designing these educational games to reward cognitive achievements and promote collaborative learning, educators can create a more dynamic and effective learning environment that resonates with the digital generation, ultimately leading to greater student success and development.

  • Text generation: From drafting lesson plans to creating formative assessments, Gen AI can produce a wide range of written content and aid educators in curriculum development.
  • Visual content creation: Gen AI can design images, graphics, and diagrams, useful for visual learning aids. Canva has a host of AI features in their Magic Studio that assist with graphics creation.
  • Audio production: Beyond text, Gen AI can create spoken audio content, music, and sound effects, enhancing auditory learning experiences. SpeechKi turns any text into audio with realistic AI voices.
  • Video production: AI can produce videos, making multiple means of representation possible for a teacher to provide learners. I have had great luck with Pictory for creating quick and easy visual representations of content.
  • Personalized learning materials: Gen AI makes it easy to tailor educational content to individual student needs; it can adapt materials based on difficulty levels, interests, and learning styles. Try asking a Gen AI chatbot such as ChatGPT to customize text to a specific reading level.
  • Language translation: Gen AI can translate educational materials for diverse language needs, making learning more accessible and inclusive.

In essence, the rise of Gen AI in education signifies the potential to shift towards more dynamic, inclusive, and personalized learning experiences. However, due to the original outputs, it also presents a challenge to traditional educational methods with focus on memorizing content. Students often demonstrate their learning through written explanations in the forms of short answer questions and essays. Gen AI is flipping this on its head. 

Demonstrating learning in the AI era

The advent of Gen AI in education is reshaping the way we assess and demonstrate learning. The traditional methods of testing and evaluation must evolve to accommodate the capabilities of AI. Demonstrating learning needs to move from testing memorization to showcasing transferable skills. One of the biggest misconceptions about AI in education is that it will encourage students to cheat and cause academic integrity concerns. Did students cheat before AI was around? Yes. Could students use generative AI tools like ChatGPT to cheat and cut corners on an assignment? ABSOLUTELY. However, there are a couple of major problems with this line of thinking.

The first is an equity concern. Educators find it socially acceptable for a student to hire a tutor to help them write their college admission essay. We also accept the fact that, many times, a parent helps build their 4th-grader’s science fair project. In both of these instances, we don’t consider it cheating. However, if a student uses generative AI to help them edit their college admission paper or brainstorm a science fair idea, there’s a belief that it is dishonest. By considering human-assisted help fair but computer-assisted help not fair, we create an equity gap.

The second reason why cheating with AI is being mishandled is the belief that it will encourage students to cheat. This is akin to saying that a vape will encourage students to smoke. If you take the vape away, you still don’t address the behavior. The same is true with AI.

Rather than focus on students using technology to cheat, educators should reflect on what they are assessing. Are they truly measuring student learning or is it a compliance-based assignment or worksheet? Is the “process” being evaluated with the same or greater care than the final “product?” By focusing evaluations on the process of learning instead of the product, educators can not only prevent AI-assisted cheating, but they can also better evaluate a student’s understanding of a particular topic.

Misconception: AI will eliminate jobs.
Truth: It will create more jobs, with different requirements.

The simple misconception is that AI will eliminate jobs, but really it will create more jobs, with different requirements, than it will eliminate. These new jobs will disproportionately require durable skills like critical thinking and collaboration, making it more important than ever for people to learn these skills and, if they can, display them for employers by earning microcredentials.

As we continue into an AI-driven world, students, employees, and jobseekers need to stay agile and competitive in the marketplace, so upskilling is essential. Microcredentaling your durable skills will demonstrate your abilities for future jobs like Sentiment Analysis, Content Creators, and AI roles that require durable skills and cannot be automated. In many industries, AI will simply change the nature of available jobs. For the most part, those transformed jobs will be more engaging than the menial tasks they’re replacing. Manufacturing workers, for example, may be freed from the production line where they used to watch for defective products all day to instead spend their time improving processes using insights gained from AI systems.

AI’s role in education has changed, and not everyone understands what it can do. A discovery we made during the pilot of our durable skills course SkillBuild by Muzzy Lane is that learners were unaware that AI was guiding them to improve based on their input. They were appreciative when they found out that, in our microcredential courses, AI helps learners by providing the extra assets and feedback they need to perfect their durable skills—pushing them to the top of today’s changing job market.

What I see people getting wrong the most about AI is thinking that what it is now is what it will be in the future. Take Open AI, for example. Going from ChatGPT, which was released in November 2022, to GPT4 in March 2023 was a huge leap in capability. When ChatGPT came out and educators really started digging into it, they may have thought, “It’s not going to pass my class like a human would, so I don’t have to worry about this.” And then only a few months later, they saw that GPT4 could pass their class. And now Open AI has announced that people will be able to create their own GPTs. We don’t know the extent to which that’s going to change things, but it’s a huge step.

My point is that you can’t think in static terms when it comes to AI. It’s changing so fast, and there’s so much investment in AI right now, so many resources, so many smart people working on it, that as soon as you think you know what’s going on, it’s going to drastically change. And it’s changing so fast that no one can even really know what’s going on, except for a small handful of people who work deeply in it. To me, the biggest truth about AI right now is that as soon as we think we have a grasp on it, it’s going to be different.

Schools can also use tech and AI tools to enhance the success of teacher teams and professional learning communities (PLCs). When teacher teams set collective goals, their intended results – such as improved student outcomes – often occur in the classroom. But working toward their goals relies on effective peer-to-peer collaboration, which requires different skills and structures than classroom instruction. Technology is here to help bridge the gap.

Below are five AI and tech tools to enhance teacher team success.

1. Miro: A tool for visual brainstorming

Teacher teams need to brainstorm, exchange ideas, and work toward solutions together. An online whiteboard is a great solution for collaborative work because it provides a centralized canvas where members communicate with one another visually.

Miro users populate their whiteboards by uploading documents and images, embedding videos, or linking to websites. They can use sticky notes, shapes, drawing tools, emojis, and the like to share and respond to content. The whiteboards expand to hold any amount of content. Plus, users can view and make changes to their Miro board synchronously or asynchronously.

Additionally, Miro offers an AI tool called Miro Assist to help teams capture advanced insights from the content on their boards. For instance, Miro Assist can condense thousands of sticky notes into a single sticky note and automatically generate presentations, mind maps, and diagrams to help teams quickly transform their content into different visual forms.

2. Paymo: A tool for project management

Among the common PLC pitfalls that diminish effectiveness are a lack of structure, directional clarity,  and leadership. The project management software Paymo, which is free for schools, can alleviate each of these challenges. 

Paymo provides a centralized workspace where teacher teams clarify roles within their group, assign tasks to individuals, and track progress over time. These features allow educators to move from brainstorming and open-ended conversation to defining concrete, actionable goals so they can make real progress.

Teams can organize uploaded assets according to project or task so members know just where to find the information they need. And Paymo includes a comprehensive dashboard where leaders can get insights about how the PLC is progressing. 

3. Tricider: A Tool for decision-making

Making decisions as a group can be challenging. Tricider is a free online tool that simplifies the decision-making process and makes it more equitable by allowing users to leave plenty of feedback. It’s a great choice for teacher teams or PLCs who want to brainstorm ideas and work toward a consensus in areas like grading and assessment or professional development.

Here’s how it works: a user enters a question they want the group to consider. They then send the question directly to group members or get the ideas started by listing a few options for the group to consider. Recipients can add their own ideas to the list of options, leave pros and cons for other members to consider, and vote for their favorite ideas. The feedback is listed in three easy-to-read columns, which helps make even complex discussions easy to digest.

Giving team members the chance to weigh in on decisions helps create buy-in and a sense of shared accountability, which is one way to accelerate the success of your teacher teams.

4. Conceptboard’s Plus Delta Template: A tool for reflection

Conceptboard is another online whiteboard that teams can use for visual collaboration. Their Plus Delta template is perfect for teachers who want to self-reflect on their practice.

Plus Delta is a formative evaluation model that prompts individuals to assess what went well with an event or experience and what could be improved. Conceptboard’s template is just as straightforward as the evaluation model. In the “plus” column, teachers record practices they want to replicate, while in the “delta” column, they list opportunities for growth and enhancement. 

These insights promote a continuous improvement mindset that can help teachers strengthen their team’s collective efficacy, or belief in their joint ability to positively affect students. Research has shown that mindset matters: collective teacher efficacy has a strong and positive correlation to student achievement.

5. TeachFX: A tool for tracking engagement

TeachFX is an AI-powered app that provides instructional feedback for K-12 educators. Teachers use their phones to capture an audio recording of their lesson. Then, TeachFX generates personalized reports on academic vocabulary, talk ratio, and student engagement. 

The feedback that TeachFX provides is private, objective, and non-evaluative. Rather than telling teachers how to change their practice, TeachFX empowers them with data they can use to guide their own growth and decision-making. 

The data teachers receive may be surprising. One middle school teacher overestimated the amount of time her students spent talking during a lesson by 10 times (she guessed five minutes; it was actually 30 seconds). Gaining this level of self-awareness makes the tool so valuable for teacher teams who are looking to challenge their current thinking and practice. 

Of course, strategies to increase engagement in the classroom go beyond boosting the time students spend talking. But students’ willingness to participate in discussion is one indicator of their comfort level and motivation – and it’s something that TeachFX can help improve over time using research-based methods

A valuable opportunity to boost teacher team effectiveness 

It’s no secret that the expanding world of tech and AI provides educators with a variety of tools designed to increase their professional effectiveness. Since researchers at Carnegie Mellon University helped invent AI in the 1950s, AI has been transforming how we learn, work, and play–and that change is now happening at breakneck speed.

Over the last 30 years, I have witnessed the evolving landscape of AI in education. Many early AI efforts were focused on using computers to model human thinking as a way of confirming our understanding of how the human mind works. For example, Herb Simon and others studied how chess masters played the game in order to understand problem solving. They discovered that much of their skill involved developing perceptual abilities that allowed them to look at a chess board and immediately see potential moves, rather than searching all possible moves.

Over time, AI diverged into two tracks: replicating human intelligence, and expertly accomplishing tasks thought to be unique to humans. AI chess programs, like much of AI, focused more on playing the game well and less on playing it the way humans do.

In education, AI retains its focus on cognitive modeling. Unlike chess, where playing the game well is the point, education systems need to track students’ reasoning in order to help students build expertise. It’s not about speed or efficiency in arriving at the correct answer; it’s about nurturing a student’s comprehension and conceptual understanding.

The experience of creating AI that models human thinking is, perhaps, more relevant in education than in other fields. So, how do we ensure that AI supports the fundamental goal of fostering a student’s understanding, rather than simply focusing on speed, efficiency, or correctness?

Here are a few questions to consider when researching and evaluating AI programs for the classroom.

Does the AI think like a student?

Education is all about making connections with students. Because each student has different backgrounds, experiences, and interests, good teachers adjust their instruction to match each student’s needs. Good educational AI needs to do the same thing.

The reasons why pile up quickly. Some worry it could lead to their children spending less time on schoolwork and more time on screens. Others fear what their kids may wind up seeing and hearing in online gameplay. More than a few don’t even know what esports means.

I’ve seen up close how those concerns are fading while esports in education become more and more prevalent. At Mira Mesa High School in San Diego, California, which has launched an esports program, teacher Brandon Trieu has proven through the success of the team he coaches, the Mira Mesa Marauders, that esports are a valuable addition to the classroom. They instill important leadership, critical thinking, and communication skills that students carry with them throughout their education journey. Teachers and administrators in schools from coast to coast are recognizing the same lesson.

“I haven’t seen any drawbacks to it. I’ve seen kids be more attentive to their grades. They want to be a part of something,” Trieu says. “The family environment that we’ve created here, I don’t see what school doesn’t want that.”

Esports programs offer students all the benefits of traditional athletics, including evidence of increased engagement, higher GPAs, and a deeper sense of community, according to research conducted by UC Irvine Connected Learning Lab.
